PLEASE HELP I WILL GIVE BRAINLIEST AND 30 POINTS
A Big Year
By Bob Kowalski

Would you go to the ends of the earth to see a bird? What if it were a really special bird: one with beautiful feathers, an entrancing call, or a silly dance? What if seeing that one special bird would allow you to win a contest?

If that contest doesn't get you on television or win you any cash prizes, would you still do it? For those who participate in the "Big Year," the honor of beating the previous record is the only reward they get or even want.

A "Big Year" is a year in which a person attempts to see as many different species of birds as possible within a particular region. For most in North America who participate in a "Big Year," this region is the lower 48 American states, plus Alaska, Canada, and a couple of French islands off the Canadian coast.

You may be thinking that looking at birds is silly, but just think about the numbers of the recent record holders and the commitment it takes to get these numbers. One recent "Big Year" winner managed to see 744 birds in one year, missing the record by just one bird. Big Year birders travel by train, plane, boat, car, bicycle, and of course, by foot. They can cover over 150 thousand miles to get numbers of sightings this high. They can also spend a small fortune.

Just to clarify, the birds these contestants are counting are the number that they see in a particular year. You see, the contest is based on an honor system. No pictures or other evidence is required as proof of a sighting. Most birders take great pride in their reputation and their abilities to see or hear and then identify a bird. Usually, important sightings of the rare birds needed to get counts in the 700s are visited by hundreds of birders. It is pretty hard to cheat your way to a record-breaking year, but in general, few are interested in cheating.

This honesty comes from the fact that most people who want to break such a record know the greatest rewards are not necessarily in winning. Such rewards are in being able to commit a year of your life to doing something you love. Rewards are found in seeing amazing, inspiring creatures like the California Condor or the Magnificent Frigate bird. Rewards also come in spending time with people who, like you, want to spend their time looking to the skies and trees for glimpses of emerald, crimson, or cerulean blue feathered jewels.

You don't have to be able to travel a continent to have a big birding experience though. Have a big month. Or a big weekend. Set a personal record, learn to identify the species that live in your part of the world, or try to learn the calls of just two species of birds. You will soon find looking at birds isn't such a strange way to spend your time.

Extra! Extra! Backyard Birding
Many schools, families, and young birders across the country participate in the "Great Backyard Bird Count." While not as long as a "Big Year," the "Great Backyard Bird Count" happens every year. It depends on birders and families across the country to watch feeders and other areas in their yards and count the number of birds they see. Unlike the "Big Year," the goal is not to see who can count the most birds. Instead, participants in this event work together to help bird experts get a good idea of how birds are doing. Participants are given checklists and enter their sightings on a website. Called a "citizen-science" project, this event is open to anyone, requires no travel, and happens every year over one weekend in February.

Part A:
What is the main idea of the paragraph that begins "Just to clarify," and explains how contestants count sightings?

Fill in blank 1 using A, B, C, or D.
The contest lasts for only one year and requires little evidence.
These birders use an honor system because most love birding more than winning.
The number of sightings typical "Big Year" birders see is amazing.

Part B:
Select one quotation from the text that supports your answer to Part A. Enter your selection in blank 2 using E, F, or G.
The birds these contestants are counting are the number that they see in a particular year.
No pictures or other evidence is required as proof of a sighting.

G. Most birders take great pride in their reputation and their abilities.

Part C

Analyzing the paragraph:We are looking for the main idea of the paragraph that begins with "Just to clarify." Although it does mention that the contest lasts one year and that it requires little evidence, all of that is said with the intention of making something clear. What the author wants to convey with that paragraph is that, for the birders who take part in the contest, winning is not the most important part. Their passion for birding is what drives them.Evidence of that is the fact that they take pride in their abilities and are not interested in cheating. They could very well lie about the number of birds they have seen, but since winning is not their goal, they do not.

"The road to success is lined with many tempting parking spaces."
- Traditional Proverb

Choice A: Explain what the quotation is saying in your own words. Include examples to
support your explanation.
Choice B: State whether you agree with the quotation. Include specific reasons as
evidence to support your opinion.

Answers

Choice A: The proverb basically means that on the road to success there are many tempting things that could keep you from being successful such as greed and other things. So say you want to be a lawyer when you grow up, someone you see in public might harass and say rude things to you making you want to fight them. This could be considered a parking space because you getting into an altercation with that person can prevent you from being successful.

Choice B: I agree with it because there are many things that could prevent you from being successful when you are trying to. There are obstacales and many things may get into your way. Take the hercules cartoon movie for example, Hercules was going on a bunch of quests to prove himself to the gods, but then he met meg on the way(this would be considered the "parking space"). This was preventing him from being successful because meg was getting in his way of proving himself to the gods, because he was getting distracted by her.

Fill it out and turn it in: that’s the message thousands of school districts send parents each year when they offer applications for the federal government’s National School Lunch Program (NSLP). And each year, millions of parents comply. But new data suggest that the process for verifying eligibility for the program is fundamentally broken and that taxpayers may be picking up the tab for participation by ineligible families. The NSLP, which is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) at an annual cost of $8 billion, serves 31 million American children each day. The program’s goal is to help low-income students succeed in public and private school classrooms by ensuring they have adequate nutrition, a mission that is compromised if substantial funds are being spent on ineligible families or the program fails to reach the neediest students.

Answer:

I think the night of Daisy’s death represents how her death affects August’s life.  For August, Daisy’s death affects his life by making him depressed and for one night he can’t sleep in his own room the night of that day because he feels an urge of loneliness without his dog in his bed. So when he goes to his mom’s room the urge of loneliness from daisy gets replaced by the comfort of his mom’s arms. Right when he gets in his moms arms he starts to release the urge of loneliness and replaces it with comfort so he is eased to sleep. So I think Daisy’s death gives August a feeling loneliness so august then has to try and replace his loneliness with something else. When he does replace his loneliness with comfort again that night with his mom makes him not as worried anymore. He also starts to realize how much his mom helps him through a lot of different things.

Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter without adequate inducement or justification. It leads also to concessions to the favorite nation of privileges denied to others which is apt doubly to injure the nation making the concessions; by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained, and by exciting jealousy, ill-will, and a disposition to retaliate, in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld.(2) As avenues to foreign influence in innumerable ways, such attachments are particularly alarming to the truly enlightened and independent patriot. How many opportunities do they afford to tamper with domestic factions, to practice the arts of seduction, to mislead public opinion, to influence or awe the public councils? Such an attachment of a small or weak towards a great and powerful nation dooms the former to be the satellite of the latter.(3) Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence (I conjure you to believe me, fellow-citizens) the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake, since history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of republican government. But that jealousy to be useful must be impartial; else it becomes the instrument of the very influence to be avoided, instead of a defense against it. Excessive partiality for one foreign nation and excessive dislike of another cause those whom they actuate to see danger only on one side, and serve to veil and even second the arts of influence on the other. Real patriots who may resist the intrigues of the favorite are liable to become suspected and odious, while its tools and dupes usurp the applause and confidence of the people, to surrender their interests.(4) The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible. So far as we have already formed engagements, let them be fulfilled with perfect good faith. Here let us stop. Europe has a set of primary interests which to us have none; or a very remote relation. Hence she must be engaged in frequent controversies, the causes of which are essentially foreign to our concerns. Hence, therefore, it must be unwise in us to implicate ourselves by artificial ties in the ordinary vicissitudes of her politics, or the ordinary combinations and collisions of her friendships or enmities.(5) Our detached and distant situation invites and enables us to pursue a different course. If we remain one people under an efficient government, the period is not far off when we may defy material injury from external annoyance; when we may take such an attitude as will cause the neutrality we may at any time resolve upon to be scrupulously respected; when belligerent nations, under the impossibility of making acquisitions upon us, will not lightly hazard the giving us provocation; when we may choose peace or war, as our interest, guided by justice, shall counsel.(6) Why forego the advantages of so peculiar a situation? Why quit our own to stand upon foreign ground? Why, by interweaving our destiny with that of any part of Europe, entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of European ambition, rivalship, interest, humor or caprice?(7) It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world; so far, I mean, as we are now at liberty to do it; for let me not be understood as capable of patronizing infidelity to existing engagements. I hold the maxim no less applicable to public than to private affairs, that honesty is always the best policy. I repeat it, therefore, let those engagements be observed in their genuine sense. But, in my opinion, it is unnecessary and would be unwise to extend them.Which rhetorical device does the author employ to humanize him and minimize the gap between president and citizen?
