Read the excerpt from “Tools of the Spymaster."

The numbers that Major Tallmadge assigned to members of the Culper Ring were from a secret writing system he invented. He substituted digits for words that would be used in messages. "Long Island," for example, was 728, "arms" was 7, and "city" was 88. There was a number for each month, such as 341 for "January." He made four copies of his codes. He kept one and gave the others to Woodhull, Townsend, and General Washington. For words that did not have a number code, Tallmadge gave his agents a cipher. In a cipher, each letter in a message is replaced by another letter or a number.

The author’s purpose in this excerpt is to

A)teach readers about a code system used during the American Revolution.
B)persuade readers that ciphers are the greatest American invention.
C)argue that Major Tallmadge made a mistake in sharing copies of his codes.
D)compare the American codes for secret letters to the British codes.

Answers

Answer: C: Laughter may help people fight disease and feel better. Try it, I got it right!

Explanation:

Laughter affects the body in ways similar to aerobic exercise.

When you laugh, your heart rate and the flow of blood throughout your body increase, helping to transport oxygen to your organs, and move waste, such as carbon dioxide away from them.

Its effects were tested in a 2010 University of Texas at Austin study in which participants watched a 30-minute comedy video.

Their blood flow increased by 17 percent, with the effect lasting up to 24 hours.

Other studies indicate that laughter can lower levels of stress hormones while providing multiple physical benefits.

"When you allow yourself a good, old-fashioned belly laugh, you are using your stomach muscles, shoulders, opening up your lungs and actually improving your posture", says psychologist Judy Kuriansky.

At the same time, it may increase the activity of disease-fighting cells in the immune system.

These effects are getting doctors' attention because they reveal that laughter may hold healing properties.

In fact, this discovery is having a phenomenal influence on health care.

The correct answer according to the above paragraph is

C: Laughter may help people fight diseases and feel better.

Science has shown that the brain (that is, the mind) tells the body what to do. It does this by instructing the body to release various chemicals which in turn determine how the body reacts. Depending on the chemicals that are released, the body may feel strong, weak, more energetic, less moody. less stressed, etc.

Some of those chemicals may also:

increase the immune system of the body. When the immune system is more efficient, the body is able to attack diseases more efficiently and speed up the healing process. improve a person's emotional state thus helping them to manage the stress and pain they are going throughassist the heart in functioning more effectively.

The science of laughter

There are several areas of the brain that that react electronically to jokes or information that is humous. They are:

the left side of the cortex;frontal lobemotor sections of the brainthe right hemisphere of the cortex.

Without the limbic system of the brain, a person would not be able to laugh.

Psychologists have indicated that a person will only produce laughter if the person's mind is able to go through two processes:

identify an element or elements of surprise or the unexpected in the humorous information;rationalize or identify something else that seems logical after the unexpected activity has occurred.

In summary, the more laughter a person has, the healthier they will be. It, therefore, would be very helpful to expose a sick person to lots of humorous material.

Traditional Academic Essays In Three Parts

Part I: The Introduction

An introduction is usually the first paragraph of your academic essay. If you’re writing a long essay, you might need 2 or 3 paragraphs to introduce your topic to your reader. A good introduction does 2 things:

Gets the reader’s attention. You can get a reader’s attention by telling a story, providing a statistic, pointing out something strange or interesting, providing and discussing an interesting quote, etc. Be interesting and find some original angle via which to engage others in your topic.

Provides a specific and debatable thesis statement. The thesis statement is usually just one sentence long, but it might be longer—even a whole paragraph—if the essay you’re writing is long. A good thesis statement makes a debatable point, meaning a point someone might disagree with and argue against. It also serves as a roadmap for what you argue in your paper.

Part II: The Body Paragraphs

Body paragraphs help you prove your thesis and move you along a compelling trajectory from your introduction to your conclusion. If your thesis is a simple one, you might not need a lot of body paragraphs to prove it. If it’s more complicated, you’ll need more body paragraphs. An easy way to remember the parts of a body paragraph is to think of them as the MEAT of your essay:

Main Idea. The part of a topic sentence that states the main idea of the body paragraph. All of the sentences in the paragraph connect to it. Keep in mind that main ideas are…

like labels. They appear in the first sentence of the paragraph and tell your reader what’s inside the paragraph.

arguable. They’re not statements of fact; they’re debatable points that you prove with evidence.

focused. Make a specific point in each paragraph and then prove that point.

Evidence. The parts of a paragraph that prove the main idea. You might include different types of evidence in different sentences. Keep in mind that different disciplines have different ideas about what counts as evidence and they adhere to different citation styles. Examples of evidence include…

quotations and/or paraphrases from sources.

facts, e.g. statistics or findings from studies you’ve conducted.

narratives and/or descriptions, e.g. of your own experiences.

Analysis. The parts of a paragraph that explain the evidence. Make sure you tie the evidence you provide back to the paragraph’s main idea. In other words, discuss the evidence.

Transition. The part of a paragraph that helps you move fluidly from the last paragraph. Transitions appear in topic sentences along with main ideas, and they look both backward and forward in order to help you connect your ideas for your reader. Don’t end paragraphs with transitions; start with them.

Keep in mind that MEAT does not occur in that order. The “Transition” and the “Main Idea” often combine to form the first sentence—the topic sentence—and then paragraphs contain multiple sentences of evidence and analysis. For example, a paragraph might look like this: TM. E. E. A. E. E. A. A.

Part III: The Conclusion

A conclusion is the last paragraph of your essay, or, if you’re writing a really long essay, you might need 2 or 3 paragraphs to conclude. A conclusion typically does one of two things—or, of course, it can do both:

=

What do you understand about grammar?

Grammar is the rule of a language governing the sounds, words, sentences, and other elements, as well as their combination and interpretation. The word grammar also denotes the study of these abstract features or a book presenting these rules. In a restricted sense, the term refers only to the study of sentence and word structure excluding vocabulary and pronunciation.

Grammar is the underlying structure of a language that any native speaker of that language knows intuitively. The systematic description of the features of a language is also grammar. These features are phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Depending on the grammarian’s approach, grammar can be prescriptive, descriptive, or generative. The simplification of grammar for classroom use contrasted sharply with the complex studies that scholars of linguistics were conducting about languages.

During the 19th and early 20th centuries the historical point of view flourished.
