THE WORLD WITH A THOUSAND MOONS
CHAPTER 1: Thrill Cruise
By Edmond Hamilton

Lance Kenniston felt the cold realization of failure as he came out of the building into the sharp chill of the Martian night. He stood for a moment, his lean, drawn face haggard in the light of the two hurtling moons.

He looked hopelessly across the dark spaceport. It was a large one, for this ancient town of Syrtis was the main port of Mars. The forked light of the flying moons showed many ships docked on the tarmac—a big liner, several freighters, a small, shining cruiser and other small craft. And for lack of one of those ships, his hopes were ruined!

A squat, brawny figure in shapeless space-jacket came to Kenniston's side. It was Holk Or, the Jovian who had been waiting for him.

"What luck?" asked the Jovian in a rumbling whisper.

"It's hopeless," Kenniston answered heavily. "There isn't a small cruiser to be had at any price. The meteor-miners buy up all small ships here."

"The devil!" muttered Holk Or, dismayed. "What are we going to do? Go on to Earth and get a cruiser there?"

"We can't do that," Kenniston answered. "You know we've got to get back to that asteroid within two weeks. We've got to get a ship here."

Desperation made Kenniston's voice taut. His lean, hard face was bleak with knowledge of disastrous failure.

The big Jovian scratched his head. In the shifting moonlight his battered green face expressed ignorant perplexity as he stared across the busy spaceport.

"That shiny little cruiser there would be just the thing," Holk Or muttered, looking at the gleaming, torpedo-shaped craft nearby. "It would hold all the stuff we've got to take; and with robot controls we two could run it."

"We haven't a chance to get that craft," Kenniston told him. "I found out that it's under charter to a bunch of rich Earth youngsters who came out here in it for a pleasure cruise. A girl named Loring, heiress to Loring Radium, is the head of the party."

The Jovian swore. "Just the ship we need, and a lot of spoiled kids are using it for thrill-hunting!"

Kenniston had an idea. "It might be," he said slowly, "that they're tired of the cruise by this time and would sell us the craft. I think I'll go up to the Terra Hotel and see this Loring girl."

"Sure, let's try it anyway," Holk Or agreed.

With the Jovian clumping along beside him, Kenniston made his way from the spaceport across the ancient Martian city.

Read the following line from the text:

"We can't do that," Kenniston answered. "You know we've got to get back to that asteroid within two weeks. We've got to get a ship here."

What can be inferred about Kenniston from this line? (3 points)

Write a fictional text in which a person is exposed to rumor spreading in social media.

450+ words

Answers

Answer:

Emma had always enjoyed scrolling through her social media feeds, checking out what her friends were up to, and staying up to date with the latest news and trends. However, one day, she stumbled upon a post that caught her attention. It was a rumor about one of her classmates, Sara, who was rumored to have cheated on her final exams.

Emma felt a knot form in her stomach as she read through the comments, each one more vicious and cruel than the last. Some people were even sharing screenshots of Sara's supposed "confession," which had apparently been circulating on social media for days.

Emma knew Sara well, and she couldn't believe that she would cheat on her exams. She wanted to speak up and defend her friend, but she was afraid of becoming a target of the rumors herself.

The more Emma scrolled through her feed, the more she realized how quickly and easily rumors could spread on social media. It seemed like everyone was sharing and commenting on the post, and no one was bothering to fact-check or verify the information.

Emma couldn't stop thinking about Sara and the unfair treatment she was receiving. She knew she had to do something to help, but she didn't know where to start. She decided to reach out to Sara privately and offer her support.

To Emma's relief, Sara appreciated her kindness and explained that the rumors were completely untrue. She had been struggling with some personal issues, and someone had taken advantage of that vulnerability to spread lies about her.

Together, Emma and Sara decided to take action. They contacted the school administration and reported the rumor, providing evidence that it was false. The administration took the matter seriously and launched an investigation, which eventually cleared Sara's name.

Emma learned a valuable lesson about the power of social media and the importance of standing up for what is right, even when it's difficult. She realized that rumors can cause real harm and that it's up to each of us to be responsible users of social media and to fight against false information.

How is the author’s view of Laura Bridgman different from Charles Dickens’s view?
Use details from the text to support your answer.

From the story The two Hellen Kellers (click on the PDF)

Answers

In "The Two Hellen Kellers," the author's view of Laura Bridgman differs from Charles Dickens's view. The author portrays Laura Bridgman as an intelligent, determined, and remarkable woman who achieved a great deal despite her disabilities. The author emphasizes Bridgman's impressive accomplishments, such as her ability to read, write, and communicate using sign language.

On the other hand, Charles Dickens's view of Laura Bridgman was quite different. Dickens visited Bridgman in 1842 and wrote a letter to a friend about her. In the letter, he describes Bridgman as "a curious and somewhat interesting sight, but painfully suggestive of a brute in the shape of a woman." Dickens's portrayal of Bridgman as a "brute" suggests that he saw her as less than human.

In contrast, the author of "The Two Hellen Kellers" sees Bridgman as a person who deserves respect and admiration. The author's view of Bridgman is more positive and less judgmental than Dickens's.

Flying into History Which idea is supported throughout the selection

Answers

The idea supported  throughout the selection is Lindbergh believed a new strategy was needed to fly from New York to Paris

This question relates to the article "Flying into History," which recounts how Charles Lindbergh decided to take on the task of flying nonstop from New York to Paris in a single flight. He thought that in order to fly from New York to Paris, a different approach was required. In the early days of aviation, teams of pilots and engineers made the majority of their attempts at long-distance flights in big, heavy aircraft that needed numerous refuelling stops.

Yet, Lindbergh thought that if he could create a plane that was light enough and had enough fuel to complete the journey without stopping, a solo flight across the Atlantic might be feasible. By flying the Spirit of St. Louis, a specialised monoplane, he tested his theory. The 5,800-kilometre flight distance was achieved in nearly 33 hours. The fact that Lindbergh was able to complete the voyage solo and without any stops was a great advance for aviation and paved the way for upcoming transatlantic flights.

PLEASE I NEED HELP!!!!!

Answers

Edgar Allan Poe's poem "The Raven" is a classic example of dark romanticism. The poem revolves around a lonely narrator who is visited by a raven. Through his interactions with the raven, the narrator confronts his grief and despair, ultimately leading to a sense of acceptance of his loss.

One of the central themes of "The Raven" is the theme of loss and grief. The narrator is mourning the loss of his love, Lenore, and his interactions with the raven become a metaphor for his struggle to come to terms with his loss. The repetition of the phrase "nevermore" highlights the finality of death and the narrator's inability to find solace or comfort.

Another theme present in "The Raven" is the theme of madness and psychological torment. The narrator's mental state deteriorates as he becomes increasingly obsessed with the raven and its ominous presence. The raven's constant repetition of "nevermore" takes on a haunting quality, pushing the narrator towards the brink of madness.

The theme of isolation is also prominent in "The Raven." The narrator is portrayed as a lonely figure, trapped in his grief and unable to find solace in the outside world. The raven's presence serves as a reminder of the narrator's isolation, emphasizing the futility of his attempts to escape his pain.

Finally, "The Raven" explores the theme of mortality and the inevitability of death. The narrator's interactions with the raven become a metaphor for his own mortality, highlighting the fragility and transience of life. The poem serves as a reminder that death is an unavoidable part of the human experience, and that even in the face of our greatest losses, we must learn to accept and come to terms with our mortality.

In conclusion, "The Raven" by Edgar Allan Poe is a haunting and powerful work of dark romanticism. Through its exploration of themes such as loss, madness, isolation, and mortality, the poem resonates with readers on a deeply emotional level. Poe's masterful use of language and imagery creates a sense of haunting and foreboding, making "The Raven" a true masterpiece of American literature.

In the text "Someone Might Be Watching" by Shelby Ostergaard, the author's main claim is that our constant use of technology and social media platforms has created a sense of paranoia in people.

Due to the potential for being constantly monitored and tracked. Ostergaard argues that people have become more aware of the dangers of cyberstalking and online privacy invasion, but still struggle to find a balance between their reliance on technology and their desire for privacy. She suggests that individuals should take measures to protect their personal information and be mindful of the ways in which technology can be used to monitor their activities, but also acknowledges that complete privacy in the digital age may be impossible.

Read the article below. In the fourth paragraph, the author proposes the idea that chickens are "surprisingly entertaining family pets." How does she support this idea, and does she do it convincingly? Answer in 2 to 3 sentences Coming Soon to a Neighborhood to You The most interesting do-it-yourself-trend in recent years may be that of keeping chickens as petsnot in an agricultural or rural setting, but rather in a typical suburban neighborhood, in the backyard. Its not as hard as you may think, and start-up costs are surprisingly low. The first thing you need to become a suburban chicken farmer is a coop, a solid enclosed structure where the hens can sleep safely away from predators, and where they can lay their eggs during daytime hours. A simple chicken coop can be made cheaply using cast-off plywood or old wooden pallets, for which there are an abundance of free blueprints available online. The next challenge is finding a feed storewhere most of the supplies youll need can be found. Feed stores generally offer a cheap bedding material such as pine shavings as well as prepared food to supplement the plants and bugs that chickens can find in a reasonably healthy backyard. Then there are the chickens themselves, which range in price from a couple bucks for a chick to ten or fifteen dollars for a mature, feathered-out bird. (Most seasoned backyard farmers recommend starting with mature hens.) Of course, it you want to raise your hens from chicks, youll need a warming light as well as some other equipment. Chickens are surprisingly entertaining family pets. Theyre friendly and amusing to watch, and not especially noisy unless you have a rooster, which arent usually allowed in urban or suburban zoned areas. Unless you live in a really cold climate, your chickens will thrive outdoors even during the winter, and there are breeds that are particularly cold hardy. Some hens will complain loudly when the temperatures dip near freezing for the first time. If you started putting them in their coop at sunset, though, theyll weather the winter just fine. When spring arrives, you will be the happy recipient of a daily bounty of eggs. But there are many more advantages to backyard chicken farming. Chickens can be a real asset to an organic vegetable gardenboth because they eat bugs and because they provide free fertilizer. Theyre also willing consumers of food thats just past its prime, like apples that are shriveled and mealy, bread kept in the pantry past its freshness date, or berries that are just a little too ripe. Finally, urban chicken farming can do a great deal to bring neighbors together. Sharing information about coops, chicken varieties, and tips for raising a happy and healthy flock can help you build a supportive network of like-minded friends in your community. Even if you dont have neighbors with coops of their own, theyre likely to appreciate an occasional gift of what your hens produce, especially since some breeds are known for laying eggs in soft shades of blue and green.
