Racing to Race

Carlo stopped to rest for a minute and tried to catch his breath. He’d been running for so long that he had pains in his side and his legs were beginning to hurt. He hunched over and tried to expand his lungs, but it was like trying to suck air out of a bicycle tire. His body was too exhausted to even allow him to take a deep breath, and he started to wheeze again.

“Great,” he thought, “let me just add asthma to my expanding list of ailments. I can’t believe that I can’t even jog two miles without completely collapsing!” He finally gave in to his aching body and laid down on the grass to recuperate. He closed his eyes and tried to imagine himself running on the school track in the 1,600-meter race. He pictured himself running steadily toward the finish line, running effortlessly like a cheetah in the jungle. He was so lost in thought that he didn’t even hear Meiya approach.

“Hey sleepyhead, what are you doing napping on Sean’s lawn in the middle of the day?” Meiya asked playfully.

Carlo quickly sat up, breathing normally now and feeling a little embarrassed. “I am trying to get in shape to try out for track, but I can’t even run two miles,” he said dejectedly.

“Wait, how many months are you out of surgery? Didn’t you just finish rehab last week?” Meiya asked. “You can’t expect to run two miles the first day.”

It had been six months since Carlo’s surgery and he specifically remembered the doctor telling him he could start running after six months. But he thought about what Meiya had said and realized she had a good point. After his surgery, the doctor did say rehab would be crucial to his recovery but that it would take time for him to gain back full use of his leg. He thought about how a baby had to learn to walk before it could run. He remembered when his nephew was learning to crawl; within days it seemed like he was walking. Running didn’t come right away, Carlo remembered. He realized it was the same with his therapy. The maximum he had run in the past month was one mile on the treadmill, so he realized that Meiya was probably right. He would have to work at building up his endurance and set more realistic goals for himself. As he thought about what he had already accomplished, he started to smile and felt like a weight was being lifted off his shoulders. He realized that he had run almost a mile and a half before his body started to protest and if he kept working hard, he could get back to where he was before his accident.

“Since when did you get so smart, Dr. Meiya?” he teased. “Do you want to race to the next mailbox?”

“You’re on!” she challenged and took off running at full speed.

Write a paragraph about the doings of construction!

With construction every day, you build or do something new. Who would want to be inside all day or work in an office? Some of you may say that they do the same basic jobs every day but there is always a new project that you will have or need to work on. What do construction workers do? Well they do such things as building or moving a variety of structures such as scaffolding, bridges, or barricades etc. Preparing the earth for building or creating trenches, filling holes, or compressing the soil. Operating machinery such as diggers, concrete mixers, hammers and drills. Assisting other craftsmen. It’s not like your always on your own either you will have a team that helps you complete the task or project that you’re doing and they help you learn to upgrade the economy. Although I am not saying other jobs aren’t important but construction is more important than you think. Forget the boring 9 to 5 cubicle jobs — every construction site brings new, interesting challenges. You’ll also get to change things up with each new project, and avoid job stagnation that leads to burnout.

The point that can be inferred from the proclamation is: C. Lincoln thought that the addition of former slaves to the  armed forces would result in victory.

The Emancipation Proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln was aimed at releasing slaves in all parts of the United States. A major target was the South who had a larger concentration of slaves.

Lincoln also proposed that the black men joined the Union Army. This will add to their numbers and ensure victory for the United States against the Southern Confederates.

How is proofreading different from revising?

Answers

Students often use the terms “revision” and “proofreading” interchangeably, but they are actually different processes. Revision deals with organization, audience, and focus. Proofreading deals with surface errors. Reading for the big picture and trying to see your writing as readers see it.

For this project, you will have several choices! Choose ONE (1) of these three options:

Option 1:
You may choose to write a traditional 5-paragraph compare-and-contrast essay about the two Mark Twain texts. If you do this, you should follow these guidelines:

Paragraph 1—This should be an introduction of the two texts, ending with a thesis statement that explains how the three literary elements you will focus show that the texts are more similar or more different.
Paragraphs 2, 3, and 4—Each of these body paragraphs should focus on one of the terms from your prewriting activity. You should explain the evidence of that term in each text, and how this shows their similarities or their differences.
Paragraph 5—This concluding paragraph should summarize what you have presented in your body paragraphs and contain a final sentence that rephrases your thesis.
Option 2:
You may choose to do a slideshow presentation about the two texts. If you do this, you should follow these guidelines:

You should have a minimum of 8 slides (not counting a title slide for your presentation).

Slide 1—This should be a paragraph introduction of the 2 texts, including a thesis statement that states whether these texts have more similarities or more differences.
Slides 2-7—These slides should be in the "Title and 2 columns" format. The title of the slide should be one of the literary terms, and in each box you should explain how that term is represented in each text (your prewriting notes will be very helpful here!)
Slide 8—This should be a few concluding sentences, and you should state which of the terms you covered in the previous slides best prove that the two texts are more alike or more different.
Option 3:
You may choose to create a video (remember the Forest Service official who was contrasting the two volcanoes?) in which you follow these guidelines:

Begin by giving the viewer an explanation of what these two texts are.
State definitely whether you will be talking about how similar or how different these two texts are.
Using a minimum of three of the literary terms as your criteria, explain how each one relates to the text. These explanations should prove the statement you made (whether the two texts have more similarities or more differences).
Conclude your video with a final statement about the two texts.
See the rubric attached to the assignment—make sure you keep referring to this as you complete your work so that you will get all of the points possible.

Despite the fact that women do lack the strength requirements for very heavy physical tasks, they should still be allowed to serve combat positions in the United States military. First, you should read "Jane Eyre" and understand what the Lowood School is, what it stands for and the changes it needs to make. As this is a very large book, so you can look for articles that analyze what the Lowood School was like, but I can say that this was an oppressive school, where students were in very poor sanitary conditions and were constant victims of typhus and tuberculosis.

Based on this, you should think about how this school should be reinforced, to ensure more safety for students and be a place with better infrastructure, hygiene, sanitary conditions, and proper nutrition.

Therefore, please provide the following information in your response:

Show why the Lowood School needed a makeover.Show how essential this reform was.Show what changed at school.Show who funded the renovation. It shows what are the expectations for the future of the school after the reform.
