Why were the Battles of Saratoga a significant moment in the American Revolutionary War?

a.) They took trade and supply options from the colonial side.

b.) The British defeats shifted the war back to New England.

c.) They led to France entering the war on the colonial side.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

B

Explanation:

Answer 2

The Battles of Saratoga were a significant moment in the American Revolutionary War because they ultimately resulted in France entering the war on the side of the American colonists. Therefore, option C is correct.

The British forces, led by General John Burgoyne, launched an offensive campaign in 1777 to gain control of the Hudson River Valley, which would have effectively split the New England colonies from the rest of the colonies. However, Burgoyne's army was ultimately defeated in two crucial battles at Saratoga, New York.

The American victory at Saratoga was a turning point in the war. It boosted American morale and demonstrated to the world that the American colonists were capable of standing up against the powerful British military.

"The road to success is lined with many tempting parking spaces."
- Traditional Proverb

Choice A: Explain what the quotation is saying in your own words. Include examples to
support your explanation.
Choice B: State whether you agree with the quotation. Include specific reasons as
evidence to support your opinion.

Answers

Choice A: The proverb basically means that on the road to success there are many tempting things that could keep you from being successful such as greed and other things. So say you want to be a lawyer when you grow up, someone you see in public might harass and say rude things to you making you want to fight them. This could be considered a parking space because you getting into an altercation with that person can prevent you from being successful.

Choice B: I agree with it because there are many things that could prevent you from being successful when you are trying to. There are obstacales and many things may get into your way. Take the hercules cartoon movie for example, Hercules was going on a bunch of quests to prove himself to the gods, but then he met meg on the way(this would be considered the "parking space"). This was preventing him from being successful because meg was getting in his way of proving himself to the gods, because he was getting distracted by her.

So when he goes to his mom’s room the urge of loneliness from daisy gets replaced by the comfort of his mom’s arms. Right when he gets in his moms arms he starts to release the urge of loneliness and replaces it with comfort so he is eased to sleep. So I think Daisy’s death gives August a feeling loneliness so august then has to try and replace his loneliness with something else. When he does replace his loneliness with comfort again that night with his mom makes him not as worried anymore. And each year, millions of parents comply. But new data suggest that the process for verifying eligibility for the program is fundamentally broken and that taxpayers may be picking up the tab for participation by ineligible families. The NSLP, which is administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) at an annual cost of $8 billion, serves 31 million American children each day. The program’s goal is to help low-income students succeed in public and private school classrooms by ensuring they have adequate nutrition, a mission that is compromised if substantial funds are being spent on ineligible families or the program fails to reach the neediest students.

A Big Year
By Bob Kowalski

Would you go to the ends of the earth to see a bird? What if it were a really special bird: one with beautiful feathers, an entrancing call, or a silly dance? What if seeing that one special bird would allow you to win a contest?

If that contest doesn't get you on television or win you any cash prizes, would you still do it? For those who participate in the "Big Year," the honor of beating the previous record is the only reward they get or even want.

A "Big Year" is a year in which a person attempts to see as many different species of birds as possible within a particular region. For most in North America who participate in a "Big Year," this region is the lower 48 American states, plus Alaska, Canada, and a couple of French islands off the Canadian coast.

You may be thinking that looking at birds is silly, but just think about the numbers of the recent record holders and the commitment it takes to get these numbers. One recent "Big Year" winner managed to see 744 birds in one year, missing the record by just one bird. Big Year birders travel by train, plane, boat, car, bicycle, and of course, by foot. They can cover over 150 thousand miles to get numbers of sightings this high. They can also spend a small fortune.

Just to clarify, the birds these contestants are counting are the number that they see in a particular year. You see, the contest is based on an honor system. No pictures or other evidence is required as proof of a sighting. Most birders take great pride in their reputation and their abilities to see or hear and then identify a bird. Usually, important sightings of the rare birds needed to get counts in the 700s are visited by hundreds of birders. It is pretty hard to cheat your way to a record-breaking year, but in general, few are interested in cheating.

This honesty comes from the fact that most people who want to break such a record know the greatest rewards are not necessarily in winning. Such rewards are in being able to commit a year of your life to doing something you love. Rewards are found in seeing amazing, inspiring creatures like the California Condor or the Magnificent Frigate bird. Rewards also come in spending time with people who, like you, want to spend their time looking to the skies and trees for glimpses of emerald, crimson, or cerulean blue feathered jewels.

You don't have to be able to travel a continent to have a big birding experience though. Have a big month. Or a big weekend. Set a personal record, learn to identify the species that live in your part of the world, or try to learn the calls of just two species of birds. You will soon find looking at birds isn't such a strange way to spend your time.

Extra! Extra! Backyard Birding
Many schools, families, and young birders across the country participate in the "Great Backyard Bird Count." While not as long as a "Big Year," the "Great Backyard Bird Count" happens every year. It depends on birders and families across the country to watch feeders and other areas in their yards and count the number of birds they see. Unlike the "Big Year," the goal is not to see who can count the most birds. Instead, participants in this event work together to help bird experts get a good idea of how birds are doing. Participants are given checklists and enter their sightings on a website. Called a "citizen-science" project, this event is open to anyone, requires no travel, and happens every year over one weekend in February.

Part A:
What is the main idea of the paragraph that begins "Just to clarify," and explains how contestants count sightings?

Fill in blank 1 using A, B, C, or D.
The contest lasts for only one year and requires little evidence.

On pages 223 and 224, Carlotta mentions several historical events including the March on Washington, where Dr. King gave his “I Have a Dream” speech; the bombing of the 16th Street Church in Birmingham, Alabama; and the assassination of President Kennedy. What are Carlotta's reactions to these events? What might account for Carlotta's different reactions to them?

Answers

Answer:

Carlotta seems to be removed from the events. She describes her reaction to the March  on Washington like this: “I had no burning desire to participate in a march that seemed  to me then purely symbolic,” but then she felt how powerful it was when she saw the  thousands of people on television. However, when Carlotta heard about the 16th Street  Church bombing and President Kennedy’s assassination, she was horrified.

It seems like her reaction to the March on Washington reflected her experience—a  march by itself didn’t seem to mean much after her time at Central High School where  she faced so much discrimination. Upon hearing the news of the 16th Street Church  bombing, however, she said, “I knew that the same fate so easily could have been  mine.” She identified with the victims in that case. Similarly, President Kennedy’s  assassination made her reflect on her experiences, saying “his life extinguished by the  same kind of hatred that had been so rampant in Little Rock. I wondered how—and  sometimes why—I survived.”

The first person point of view is when the speaker is a character within the story. he/ she is involved in the events of the story and also presents the readers the window through which we view the story. And in this narrative poem, the first person point of view helps us understand how the speaker begins to feel accepted by others, though at the cost of his wrongful use of English.
