In Japan, it appeared in the 1100s in the Heian period. The nobles were at the top than by warriors, with serfs below. They followed codes of honour, loyal and brave, with being reserved and quiet. Samurai were seen as a private guard for the nobles in Japan, Knights as a protector of the nobility class.

The difference between the feudal between the two was the ownership of the land. Knights gained land as payment for their military service. In Japan, samurai did not own any land, they only served their lords and in armies protecting from invaders.
